Sankofa – Adinkra Symbol

The Sankofa is an Adinkra Symbol. Sankofa means” go back and take” . While this may seem at odds with what is good – it holds deep meaning with many Africans. It could be to claim ones culture back, or one past, or one ancestors. The symbol comes from the adinkra symbols- which probably have the most beautiful meanings of all African symbols. A sankofa ring is always something I would like a commission for – this powerful African symbol has inspired many African to reclaim their lost cuture and heritage.

Other Adinkra symbols, mostly used on African fabrics, and now on almost anything, are equally well loved – covering friendship symbols, love symbols and protection Symbols. They are all exquisitely designed and balanced, and, like the Sankofa symbol, very popular. Many of the designs have been used in African rings, the meanings are just perfect for many of the sentiments that are expressed in a marriage. Of course, like all things, many traditional healers in Africa use these symbols for their spells and magic.
